That is an unsustainable business model. The photographers winning right now have fewer clients, not more. The fastest way to get there? Someone who's already there.

This is for you if:Β
You're already working. The shoots are real. The clients are real. The work is good.
But you have to constantly hustle get more clients and charge more for your work.
You're delivering extraordinary creative for clients who pay you once and disappear.
You know it's unsustainable but you don't know how to change it.
That's not a talent problem. That's a business model problem.
Everyone else is teaching you to be a better freelancer.
I'm going to teach you how to build a business that lasts a lifetime.
Who is Tommy Joyce?
I started my career as an unpaid intern at a tech start up called ActiveJunky.com. At the end of the summer they were shooting a digital winter gear guide in Chile, so I make them an offer. I'll shoot the campaign for free, and if it goes well, I get a full time salary. Hanging out of a helicopter photographing skiing in the Andes I realized: this is the only life I want.
I cut my teeth shooting for them for four years, and then took the leap and quit to be a full time photographer and filmmaker.
I'm so grateful I got to live that dream for the last 15 years, chasing assignments to all seven continents. Shooting six stories for National Geographic. Building campaigns for Adidas, Canon, Eddie Bauer, Red Bull. Co-founding a production company that generates millions in revenue and millions of views for documentary films. Doing it as a one man band and with a massive crew. Meeting my now-wife on assignment and shooting alongside her in the field. Being an entrepreneur.
I love it more than anything. But I also came from entrepreneurship, and they ask the hard questions that most photographers never stop long enough to think about.
At some point you have to ask: is this hustle level sustainable? Not just for the next year. For the next decade. If the only plan is to keep pushing as hard as you're pushing right now β that's not a plan. That's hope. Do you have a roadmap to retire on this career?
The real question is: how can this work I'm doing today make me money for the rest of my life?
This is the approach I wish someone had taught me sooner.

Tommy in the Field Around The World
This is Not About Your Work. It's About Your Business Model.Β
WHAT EVERYONE'S MISSING
Brands are consolidating. The influencer era is unwinding. AI is absorbing the generic briefs.Β
THE WAY TO WIN
Fewer clients. Deeper relationships. Multiple revenue streams. A business that doesn't stop when you do.
The Better Model with Better Cash Flow
Most working photographers spend years getting better at their craft. Better gear. Better editing. Stronger images.
And none of it moves the needle on income.
Because the gap between what you're worth and what you're making isn't a talent problem. It's a business model problem. You're selling your time for one off projects and everyone is teaching you how to either charge more or get more clients. This is about creating recurring revenue AND multiple income streams so you never have to think about cash flow again.
It won't change until the model does.
What This Looks Like When It WorksΒ
You wake up and your income for the month is already covered β before you've sent a single pitch or filled a single day on your calendar.
Brands reach out to tell you what they need next because you've built a partnership, not a vendor relationship. Your archive generates revenue from work you shot years ago. Every trip you take produces deliverables for two or three clients simultaneously so your profit margins increase dramatically.
That's not a fantasy. That's what happens when you stop trading time for money and start building an ecosystem. The path is specific. The moves are learnable. And if you build the systems β it compounds for the rest of your life, regardless of when you retire.
What's Inside These Courses
Β
The Mindset Shift
Β
Stop running your business like a freelancer. Start running it like a CEO. This is the identity shift that makes everything else in the course possible β and the reason most photographers stay stuck without it.
The Access Model
Β
You're not selling photography or video. You're selling access. This is the core framework. How to identify what you're already sitting on and turn it into recurring income.
Building Your Client Stack
Β
Fewer clients. Better relationships. More revenue. How to identify the right brands, structure the conversation, and move from one-off projects to long-term partnerships that pay you every month.
The Pro Pitch
Β
From first outreach to signed contract. How to price for value not cost, present your proposal, and close retainer deals β without ever sending a cold email or discounting your rate.
Systems and Operations
Β
The infrastructure that makes all of it manageable. Financial systems, contracts, file management, tech stack, time protection. None of it glamorous. All of it essential.
Multiple Revenue Streams
Β
Your shoots should be one of many. There are more ways for people to pay you every month than you're using right now and this section shows you exactly how to build them.
The photographers who achieve financial freedom are the ones who start before they feel ready.
Soon you'll be ready to:
- Build a business that AI cannot replace because it's built on access, trust, and relationships no algorithm can generate
- Price your work based on the value you create, not the hours you spend on set
- Turn a trade deal into a long-term client relationship that pays you every month
- Create proposals that sell internally to decision makers you'll never meet
- Run retainer relationships like a professional partner, not a vendor waiting to be rehired
- Identify what you have and package it into something brands will pay for consistently
- Build multiple revenue streams so your income doesn't depend on any single clientΒ
- Review your financials in thirty minutes each month and actually know where you stand
- Increase your profit margins with multi-client deliverables for each shoot
- Protect your field time from the operational weight of a business that's actually working
- Own a business that will pay you for the rest of your life, regardless of when you retire
Common Questions:
Question: Is this course for people who are just starting out?
Answer: No. This course assumes you're already working full time with real clients and real deliverables. This is for working professionals who want to change how their business operates, not learn to shoot.
Question: I already have some retainer clients. Is this still worth it?
Answer: Especially if you already have retainer clients. This course will show you how to raise those rates at renewal, add new retainer relationships without adding proportional hours, and build the systems that make a multi-client retainer business sustainable long term. Most photographers with existing retainers are leaving significant money on the table in ways this course addresses directly.
Question: How is this different from general business or marketing courses?
Answer: It's built specifically for outdoor photographers and filmmakers. The access model, the retainer structures, the trade deal mechanics, the specific client categories β all of it is built around the actual industry you're working in. There are no generic business frameworks here. Every concept is illustrated with real deals from a real adventure photography career.
Question: I shoot in a specific niche β climbing, trail running, wildlife. Does this still apply?
Answer: Yes. The access model works across every outdoor discipline. Your niche determines which brands and client categories you approach β not whether the model works. The course specifically addresses how to expand your range into new retainer markets without losing the identity you've built.
Question: How long will it take to see results?
Answer: Most identify their first retainer opportunity within thirty days, but how quickly you close it depends on the existing relationships you have and how quickly you execute. Those who move fastest are the ones who do the assignments rather than just watching the lessons. They can be scaling multiple operational revenue streams in just a few months.
Question: Do I need a large following or major brand credits to pitch the access model?
Answer: No. The access model is built around the value of your existing access (your archive, your travel schedule, your athlete relationships) not your follower count or your client list. The model works from wherever you're starting.
Question: What if I've never done a retainer deal before?
Answer: The course is specifically designed to take you from zero retainer relationships to your first closed deal. Module 3 starts with your existing client relationships β the warmest possible starting point β and builds systematically from there. Your first retainer conversation will almost certainly be with someone who already knows your work.
Question: What's the difference between Artist to Operator and The Bulletproof Business?
Answer: Artist to Operator is the foundation β retainer relationships, the access model, the pitch, the systems. It's built for photographers who want to change how their business operates and close their first long-term client deals. The Bulletproof Business goes further β archive licensing, workshops, content, print, multiple revenue streams built on top of the retainer foundation. Start with Artist to Operator. Graduate to Bulletproof when you're ready to build the full ecosystem.
